Peace Silk: Love the Silk, Love the Silkworm
Peace Silk--also called Ahimsa, sanskrit for non-violence--comes from the Northeastern Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand and Assam.
In contrast to normal silk production, in which a single silk filament is extracted from a silkworm (resulting in a smooth, uniform look and feel), Peace Silk is woven from multiple pieces of fragmented silk produced when the silkworm breaks its cocoon to become a moth. This gives it a uniquely nubby, knotty texture.
The production of both the yarn and finished textile is done by women and men in rural India, which creates economic development opportunities for these communities. Approximately 1,950 individuals are in the supply chain, more than 50% of whom are women. The organization is certified through:
- Fair Trade India
- Silk Mark
- Handloom Mark
Peace Silk is relatively matte and has a soft, pliable hand that's a delight to wear. It's excellent for unstructured shirts, pants, dresses or caftans. We're very pleased to offer it!
