Ruth Bader Ginsburg: A Legacy of Power & Style

Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s reach and legacy isn’t contained to her tireless work as a Supreme Court Justice, fighting for women’s rights and human rights. It goes far beyond to touch even the world of fashion. Here, we take a look at her fashion achievements on the bench as a SCOTUS judge.

A Supreme Court Justice’s outfit isn’t the most exciting; an oversized black robe uniforms each judge. The robes, however, were originally cut to display the top of a men’s collar and tie, providing them some individual style. There was no such potential for individuality for women in the court. Of choosing to wear a collar in the first place Ginsburg said, "You know, the standard robe is made for a man…Sandra Day O'Connor and I thought it would be appropriate if we included as part of our robe something typical of a woman. So I have many, many collars." Once Ruth Bader Ginsburg took the stand, she smashed the SCOTUS fashion patriarchy, so to speak. In court, her collars and jabots didn’t always only serve as style; they made political statements and telegraphed her opinion. Her arsenal included both purchases and gifts from around the globe.

Her Favorite

A crocheted white collar, understated, yet feminine, was her go-to:

The “Dissenting Collar”

Worn the day after Trump’s election to president, Ginsburg stated that the bejeweled collar "looks fitting for dissent.”:

For the Majority

This embellished golden collar made an appearance any time RBG announced a majority opinion:

A Show of Strength

Of the Stella & Dot collar/necklace gifted by lawyer Susan Hyman, Hyman said it “...reminds me of something a warrior princess like Wonder Woman would wear as armor into battle. It projects strength, confidence, and fearlessness." It suited RBG well, and she wore it for her first portrait with the court’s newest, highly controversial judge, Brett Kavanaugh:

Beyond her collars, Justice Ginsburg also added flair with her accessories. Outside of the court, her style was even still a source of inspiration–a little tasteful sparkle here and there, and sometimes, signature fishnet gloves, which always make a statement. She will be remembered in so many incredible ways, and her contribution to our society is immeasurable. A legend and an icon, Ruth Bader Ginsburg will be missed and remembered with steadfast strength, intelligence, and style. As a women-owned and run business, we especially thank her.  Are you inspired by Justice Ginsburg's collars?
