From Downton to Downtown
Irish wools are the adventurers of the woolen world—tough enough to slog through bogs , yet chic enough to wear for an evening (but probably not on the same day).
Prized for their ability to shed water rather than absorbing it, Irish wools have been a favorite of the outdoorsy set for centuries. Our Irish wools come from the district of Ballyartella, a townland in the historical Barony of Ormond Lower in Tipperary County. The wheel-powered water mill on the banks of the Nenagh is still in use; it was first employed to power new machinery in 1893. Local sheep farmers brought their fleeces to the mill for purchase, and the six-storey mill spun, carded, and wove the wool. Now in its fourth generation, the family-run mill still produces traditional woolens of the same quality that it did over a century ago.
